DIY Barbie Costume

1950’s Cropped Top Sewing Pattern

This DIY costume was created for a space cowboy themed party from Simplicty pattern 8130.

Friends of ours recently moved to town and what better way to welcome them than a Space Cowboy themed party!

And of course, we can’t have a themed party without a fun costume so in about a day and half, I whipped up this costume using a vintage Simplicity pattern that’s been sitting in a box for a while. The first time I attempted to make this pattern, I had a really tough time. I had never sewn with boning before. Last summer I practiced, and practiced, and practiced and kinda got the hang of it. I guess practice makes kinda perfect?

The challenging part in making this top as I explain in my YouTube video, was when it was time for the last step (seriously, it was the last step). The straps for the top were wayyy too short. SMH hard. So I got creative. I turned the straps into a halter. It worked out great because I had already added the fringe and the way it laid just happen to work out.

So my DIY friends- big lesson here. Sometimes what we try to make does not work out the way we thought, but, with patience and a bit of creativity, we can turn that challenge into lemonade (or in this case, a halter top).
